Die Sauna Insel

About

Die Sauna Insel has run as a stand-alone Finnish sauna house in Dülmen since 1994. Four log-house saunas, two of them wood-fired, stand in an 8,500 sqm garden with a natural swimming lake, alongside an earth sauna, a rose-quartz cabin and a steam bath. Aufguss rituals run in the Suuri event sauna.

Good to know

• Runs aufguss sessions: a guided löyly ritual where an attendant fans the steam around the room on a schedule.
• Bar on premises: drinks alongside (or after) the session, and the venue isn't dry like most outdoor sauna setups.
• Direct lake access: most visitors plunge straight into the water between sauna rounds.
• Set in nature, away from the city, so bring a car or plan the transfer in advance.
• Set up outdoors: weather is part of the experience, so dress for the walk between cabin and water.
• Pool on site: works alongside the sauna for swim-and-sauna sessions or a longer cool-down between rounds.
• Restaurant on site, so long sessions are the design. Food is part of the visit rather than a stop on the way home.
• Pairs the sauna with spa services like massage or a scrub, so a session can sit inside a wider visit.
• Wood-fired heat: softer, heavier löyly than electric, and the smell of the stove is part of the room.

Public-holiday hours vary and a few days are closed; a monthly event night runs to 02:00 with a surcharge.
