Haar Sauna — St Ninian's

About

Scotland's first mobile wood-fired sauna, most often stationed above the tombolo at St Ninian's Beach in south Shetland. Up to six in an Estonian hut with a HUUM stove. Cold-water therapy comes straight from the North Atlantic.

Good to know

• Right on the sea: expect saltwater dips between rounds, cold even in summer.
• Set up outdoors: weather is part of the experience, so dress for the walk between cabin and water.
• Wood-fired heat: softer, heavier löyly than electric, and the smell of the stove is part of the room.
• Mobile operator: the sauna travels, so the location is part of the booking. Check the current site before you arrive.
• Bookable as a private session: rent the room for your group rather than sharing with strangers.
• Women-only sauna: the venue has a women's side or room, or runs set women-only sessions.
• Swimwear sauna: some or all sessions are taken in swimwear, so pack it.
• Runs aufguss sessions: a guided löyly ritual where an attendant fans the steam around the room on a schedule.
