Schvitz Health Club

About

The Schvitz has been a bathhouse on Oakland Avenue in Detroit since 1930, and it is the last historic one left in the city. Admission covers both saunas, the pool, a locker and towels. Some sessions are for all genders in swimsuits, and others are men-only or women-only.

Good to know

• A historic sauna with heritage worth the trip on its own, whether the building, the tradition, or both.
• Pool on site: works alongside the sauna for swim-and-sauna sessions or a longer cool-down between rounds.
• Urban venue: it sits inside the city rather than at a coast or lake. A session fits into a day in town.
• Mixed sauna: men and women share the room, in every session or on set days.
• Women-only sauna: the venue has a women's side or room, or runs set women-only sessions.
• Nude sauna: some or all sessions are taken without swimwear.
• Swimwear sauna: some or all sessions are taken in swimwear, so pack it.
• Restaurant on site, so long sessions are the design. Food is part of the visit rather than a stop on the way home.
• Pairs the sauna with spa services like massage or a scrub, so a session can sit inside a wider visit.

All genders, swimsuits required: Mon, Fri, Sat 11:00-16:00, Sun 18:00-22:00. Women only: Tue, Sat 07:00-11:00, Sun 12:00-16:00. Men only: Wed, Thu, Sun 07:00-11:00. Sunday sessions are paid separately.
