The best saunas in the Nordics
Last reviewed August 2026
The Nordics are where sauna began. This list ranks the region's rooms head-to-head, and Finland takes the slots its tradition earns.

#1 · Löyly Helsinki
Helsinki's waterfront icon · Helsinki
Helsinki's most architecturally striking public sauna, a timber-lattice building on the Hernesaari waterfront with direct sea access. The smoke sauna and the wood-heated room sit side by side, both opening onto the Baltic. There is a restaurant for afterwards, and it earns the hype.

#2 · Mooska Smoke Sauna
Estonia's UNESCO smoke ceremony · Haanja
The Estonian smoke-sauna ceremony, kept on a working farm in the Haanja hills and listed by UNESCO. The chimneyless sauna is heated slowly over a day, then master Eda Veeroja leads at least three hours of whisking, smoke and pond dips. Book by arrangement and give it the whole evening.

#3 · Kotiharjun Sauna
Fierce löyly since 1928 · Helsinki
Helsinki's last public wood-fired sauna, running since 1928 in Kallio. The löyly is fierce, the benches are worn smooth, and the regulars do not say much. No design concept and no brand: sauna at its most essential.

#4 · Kuusijärvi Outdoor Sauna
Smoke sauna, frozen lake · Helsinki
A lakeside complex on the edge of the Sipoonkorpi forest, half an hour from central Helsinki. The smoke sauna is heated for hours and the lake is the plunge. In winter it is the full ritual: dark sky, snow underfoot, hot smoke.

#5 · Pust Tromsø
The Arctic aurora sauna · Tromsø
A floating sauna in Tromsø's harbour, well above the Arctic Circle. Harbour-facing glass, a quiet room and a lavvo-style sauna look out at Tromsdalstinden and the Arctic Cathedral, with the plunge straight into the cold sea. In winter this is the dark-and-aurora version of the ritual.

#6 · Bastun i Frihamnen
Gothenburg's free civic sauna · Gothenburg
A free public sauna in Gothenburg's regenerated Frihamnen docks, designed by the Berlin collective Raumlabor. The façade is salvaged corrugated steel and the shower walls are built from twelve thousand recycled glass bottles. Civic bathing at its most literal: book a slot and pay nothing.

#7 · Sompasauna
No staff, no booking, no rules · Helsinki
A free, volunteer-run sauna on Helsinki's Sompasaari waterfront: no staff, no booking, no rules beyond sauna etiquette. It is built from salvaged materials and open around the clock in summer. Bring a towel and an open mind.
