The 10 best saunas in Scotland
Last reviewed June 2026
Scotland has the densest and most distinctive sauna scene in Britain, and it is almost entirely outdoors. Across more than forty curated venues the through-line never changes: serious heat within a few steps of seriously cold water — the North Sea, an Atlantic bay, a Highland loch — run by small operators who treat the cold dip as the whole point rather than an add-on.
It runs from the East Lothian and Fife coasts, where wood-fired barrels sit on swimming beaches, up through the Highlands to lochside spas, and out to the islands — Mull, Lewis, Shetland — where mobile huts chase the best bays of the week. What you won't find much of here is the urban bathhouse. What you will find is wood smoke, cold salt water, and a booking page.
These ten are the ones we'd send a friend to first, picked across the country rather than clustered in one county. The full directory of every curated Scottish sauna sits on the Scotland guide below.
- 1
HotBox Spa
Loch Tay's full-service contrast spa · Kenmore
The most complete day out on the list. A lochside spa at Taymouth Marina pairing a wood-fired sauna and steam room with a heated outdoor pool and a cold plunge fed straight from Loch Tay — and the same operator runs HotBoat, Scotland's first floating sauna, out from the jetty in front. If you want the full hot-cold-rest cycle without roughing it, start here.
- 2
HAAR Sauna
Shetland heat, North Atlantic plunge · Bigton
Scotland's first mobile wood-fired sauna, most often stationed above the tombolo at St Ninian's Beach in south Shetland — about as far north as the ritual goes in Britain. Six to an Estonian hut on a HUUM stove, with the cold side coming straight off the North Atlantic.
- 3
Soul Water Sauna — Granton
Edinburgh's busiest waterfront barrels · Edinburgh
Two Siberian cedar barrels on Edinburgh's Granton waterfront beside The Pitt market — Big Bear seats eighteen, Little Bear six, both facing the Firth of Forth with direct sea access between rounds. The community sessions pull a real crowd; Thursday and Friday are the quieter slots if you want room.
- 4
Escape Sauna
Clifftop, and it feels it · North Berwick
A clifftop pair above Quarrel Sands at Canty Bay — one wood-fired, one electric — with a plunge pool and Drift Coffeehouse next door for afterwards. Thirty minutes from Edinburgh, but with the Firth of Forth laid out below it feels properly remote.
- 5
Cellardyke Seaside Sauna
Heat beside a restored tidal pool · Cellardyke
Set beside the recently restored Cellardyke tidal pool in the East Neuk of Fife, looking east across the Forth to the Isle of May. The cold side is the sea itself — book a round and drop straight into the pool between sits.
- 6
Bridge 8 Hub
Three plunge pools and aufguss · Edinburgh
A wood-fired community sauna on the Union Canal in west Edinburgh with three cold plunge pools and three cold showers in rotation — the most generous contrast setup in the city. Open sessions run alongside guided Saunagus, aufguss with aromatherapy, from Friday to Sunday.
- 7
Island Sauna Shack
Mull's roaming wood-fired hut · Isle of Mull
A wood-fired sauna that moves between Mull's piers and bays — Salen, Tobermory, Fidden, Portnangael — with the sound a few steps away for the dip, and homemade teas and fruit platters between rounds. Community sessions and ninety-minute private hires for up to eight.
- 8
Wild Scottish Saunas
A twelve-seat Finnish cabin on the Fife coast · Kingsbarns
A twelve-person traditional Finnish sauna that works a circuit of the East Coast — Kingsbarns, St Andrews, Elie, Eden Springs, Forbes of Kingennie — anchored at Kingsbarns Beach looking out over the North Sea. The biggest cabin on the list, and the one to book for a group.
- 9
The Wild Heat
Glasgow's West End contrast club · Glasgow
Wood-fired heat and cold-dook barrels in the grounds of the West of Scotland Cricket Club — surprisingly peaceful for being this central. Sixty-minute public sessions, aufguss led by qualified masters, and memberships for the regulars.
- 10
Saltbox Sauna
Roaming the Outer Hebrides · Stornoway
A trio of mobile wood-fired saunas working the beaches of Lewis, Harris, Berneray and North Uist, every one with an ocean view. Mara, the one most often parked at Bayble Beach east of Stornoway, is the easiest to catch — the Outer Hebrides at their most elemental.
That's the shortlist. See every curated sauna in Scotland in the full Scotland guide.
